How Your Membrane Gets Made

1. We Source the Raw Material

We bring in monofilament woven polyester in the appropriate weights and weave densities and hold it in stock. No waiting on imports when your order comes in.

2. You Send Us Your Spec

A trough width and length, a dimensioned drawing, a photo of the worn membrane, or the old membrane itself. We confirm the right fabric weight for your material and application.

3. We Tailor It to Suit You

The fabric is precision-cut to your exact trough dimensions, seams glued and reinforced, then fully edge-sealed to prevent fraying and material bypass. All under one roof in Johannesburg.

4. Ready in 2 to 5 Business Days

Packaged and ready for collection from our Johannesburg workshop, or couriered to you anywhere in South Africa. Collect or delivered, your call.

Every membrane is made to order from raw material stock. We do not sell pre-made standard sizes or repackage imported product. We tailor each membrane to the customer's dimensions and application, the same way a tailor works from fabric and your measurements rather than pulling something off a shelf.

The Component

What Is an Airslide Membrane?

Understanding the component and why the right fabric, selected and tailored for your specific material, makes all the difference to conveying performance.

An airslide membrane, also called airslide fabric, fluidising fabric or airslide canvas, is a permeable woven fabric panel installed in the floor of an airslide conveyor trough.

Low-pressure compressed air is fed into a plenum chamber beneath the fabric. The air passes uniformly through the woven polyester structure, fluidising the dry bulk powder above and causing it to flow freely along the slightly inclined trough toward the discharge point, without any mechanical moving parts.

The trough is inclined at just 3 to 5 degrees. That gentle slope, combined with the fluidised state of the powder, is enough to move material over long distances using gravity alone. The membrane is the critical wearing component. When it glazes, blocks or tears, the entire conveying system is affected.

1

Air Enters the Plenum

Low-pressure compressed air is supplied to the plenum chamber below the membrane, distributing evenly across the full trough width.

2

Air Permeates the Fabric

Air passes through the uniform weave of the monofilament polyester membrane, emerging evenly across the full surface. No hot spots, no bypassing.

3

Material Fluidises and Flows at 3 to 5 Degrees

The emerging air suspends the bulk powder particles. The fluidised material flows freely down the 3 to 5 degree inclined trough to the discharge point under gravity, with no moving parts required.

Worn or Blocked Membrane

  • Glazing and clogging reduce air permeability. Material stops fluidising and backs up in the trough.
  • Tears or pinholes cause material to bypass into the plenum, blocking the air box and damaging downstream equipment.
  • Uneven permeability creates irregular flow channels and inconsistent discharge across the 3 to 5 degree slope.
  • Frayed or unsealed edges allow bulk material to bypass the membrane entirely, defeating the conveying system.

STOTKO-Tailored Replacement

  • Fabric weight selected from our stock specifically for your material before a single cut is made.
  • Precision-cut to your exact trough dimensions from raw material, not trimmed from a nearest standard size.
  • Fully sealed edges, glued, stitched and treated, prevent material bypass into the plenum.
  • Simply fit and run. No site trimming, no modification needed because it was made to your spec from the start.

The Workshop Process

From Raw Material to Finished Membrane

We carry the raw polyester fabric in stock and tailor each membrane from scratch. There are no pre-assembled kits or imported ready-cuts in our workshop.

1

Raw Material In Stock

We source and hold monofilament woven polyester in multiple weights and weave densities. When your order arrives, the right fabric is already on the shelf. No waiting on a supplier lead time and no import delays.

2

Fabric Selection for Your Application

Before cutting, we confirm the correct fabric weight for what you are conveying. Cement and fly ash need a denser, thicker weave. Flour and fine powders need lighter, more open fabric. We advise and select. You don't need to specify the grade.

Tailored to your material
3

Precision Cutting to Your Dimensions

The fabric is cut from the roll to your exact trough width and required length, up to 2.4 m wide. Your dimensions drive the cut. We do not work to nearest standard sizes and trim down. We cut accurately first time.

Tailored to your trough
4

Glued, Stitched, Sealed and Packaged

All edges are glued, stitched and fully sealed to prevent fraying and stop bulk material from bypassing into the plenum chamber. The finished membrane is rolled, packaged and dispatched, ready to fit directly into your trough.

Finished under one roof

Because We Hold the Raw Material, Your Lead Time Is 2 to 5 Business Days

We don't need to order fabric when you order a membrane. It's already here. That is what keeps lead times short and keeps your plant running. Urgent breakdown orders can often be expedited. Contact us to discuss.

What We Work With

The Material We Source and Tailor From

All our airslide membranes are tailored from monofilament woven polyester. It is the industry-preferred fabric for dry bulk powder airslide applications. We source it, stock it and work from it daily.

Why Monofilament Woven Polyester?

Monofilament construction uses single continuous filaments rather than spun yarn. This gives the woven fabric a precise, open pore structure that remains consistent across the service life of the membrane. That consistency is critical for maintaining uniform air distribution across the full trough width and the full 3 to 5 degree slope.

Felt and spun-yarn fabrics clog more readily with fine particles like cement dust and fly ash. The monofilament weave resists particle ingress, cleans more easily and maintains its permeability for longer. That is exactly why we stock and tailor from this material rather than alternatives.

Consistent pore geometry for uniform air permeability across the full cut width
Resists clogging by fine particles including cement dust, fly ash and flour
Handles alkaline environments created by lime and cement
Dimensionally stable under the pressure and temperature cycles of plant operation
Stocked in multiple weights. We select the right one for your application before cutting.

Applications

What We Tailor Membranes For

Each application involves different material properties including abrasiveness, alkalinity and particle size. We select the right fabric weight from our stock and tailor accordingly.

🏗️

Cement Plants

The primary airslide application, covering kiln-to-silo transfer, blending silo discharge and packing plant feed. Cement is highly abrasive and alkaline. The 3 to 5 degree slope allows gravity to do the work.

We use: Thicker, denser weave (3 to 5 mm)

Power Station Fly Ash

Extremely fine and slightly alkaline. The preferred conveying method from precipitators to silos. Requires consistent fine permeability to prevent blowback across the full slope length.

We use: Fine-weave, appropriate weight

Lime Plants

Extremely reactive and alkaline, one of the more demanding chemical environments for airslide fabric. We select for extended service life under these conditions.

We use: Alkaline-resistant fabric grade
🌾

Flour and Food-Grade Powders

Lighter, more open fabric for flour mills and starch plants. Clean material handling throughout our workshop. Food-safe contact where required.

We use: Light open weave (1 to 2 mm)
🏭

Blending and Storage Silos

Silo aeration pads and airslide discharge systems use the same fabric. We tailor flat panels and custom-shaped sections to your silo geometry.

We use: Material-matched grade
⚗️

Chemical and Industrial Powders

Alumina, titanium dioxide, phosphates and similar materials. Tell us what you are conveying and we will select the appropriate grade from stock.

We advise based on your material
🏭

Fixed Plant Installations

Any standard or non-standard trough width, any required length. Supply a drawing, a worn section, or a photo with measurements and we tailor from there.

🔧

Replacement and Breakdown Supply

Holding the raw material in stock means we can respond fast. 2 to 5 day lead time for planned replacements. Urgent breakdown orders discussed on request.

FAQ

Common Questions

We manufacture every membrane ourselves. We source and hold monofilament woven polyester raw fabric in our Johannesburg workshop and tailor each membrane to the customer's exact dimensions and application. Nothing arrives pre-cut or pre-assembled. Your membrane is made from raw material stock, to your spec, every time. This is the difference between a tailored product and an imported standard size.
Provide the trough width and required length in millimetres, and tell us what material is being conveyed. A dimensioned drawing, a photo of the worn membrane with measurements noted, or the worn membrane itself are all acceptable starting points. We will advise on the correct fabric weight before cutting and come back with a same-day quote.
Not necessarily. Tell us what you are conveying, whether cement, fly ash, lime, flour or another material, and we will advise on the correct fabric weight from our stock before cutting. If you know the original specification or can measure the old membrane's thickness, that helps, but it is not required. Our 25+ years of application experience means we can make the right call based on your material and operating conditions.
Yes. Send us the worn membrane, or a sample, or a photograph with key dimensions noted. We will match the width, length, thickness and edge treatment as closely as possible by selecting the appropriate grade from our stock and tailoring to those dimensions. If the original was imported and the specification is unclear, we will advise on the closest suitable grade we hold.
Because we source and hold the raw material ourselves. When your order comes in, we don't need to place a fabric order or wait on a supplier. The polyester is already in our Johannesburg workshop, ready to be cut and tailored to your dimensions. That is what allows us to turn a custom membrane around in 2 to 5 business days rather than weeks. Urgent breakdown orders can often be expedited. Contact us to discuss your timeline.
The raw material, the sourcing process and the tailoring workshop are all the same. The difference is the application. An airslide membrane is a flat rectangular panel for a fixed conveyor trough in a plant, silo or power station, installed at a 3 to 5 degree slope so material flows by gravity. An aeration cone is a shaped fabric panel fitted into the bottom of a mobile road or rail bulk tanker to discharge its contents.
